This year the ‘American Idol’ judge, Simon Cowell, left the show in order to bring his UK show ‘Xfactor’ to the USA; XFactor has aired in the UK for 5 years, and back in 2007, a talented gospel singing school-teacher from England named BEVERLEY TROTMAN entered The UK’s XFactor to test her vocal ability and inspire her school children. Reaching the live show finals Beverley wowed the hearts of the UK public, touching the nation wih her gospel-inspired voice. Since then, she has starred in a national production of FAME (playing the part of the school-teacher, Ms Sherman, who encourages her pupils to achieve academically!); performed at Oraclez (Europe’s largest Gospel event at London’s Wembley Arena); toured on main-land Europe; sung at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall with the 100 strong ‘All Souls Orchestra’ (for Prom Praise – DVD release September 2010); and released her debut album (Voice of Hope).

Her Story
Constantly pestered by the children (of class 6T) to audition for The X Factor, Beverley’s response was always the same: “I don’t want to be humiliated on national TV – I’ve got sense!”; but in 2006, Beverley’s life was hit by a double blow. “On Mother’s Day, my grandmother passed away. Then after trying to get to know my natural father, he died that same June. It was really tough.” However in the wake of grief, a new confidence emerged. “I thought, ‘If I did enter this thing now, what could really happen to me?……….nothing except a little dented pride;’ I’d lost the fear.”

On the show, Beverley spoke passionately of her pupils and her goal to be a positive role model for the children she knew. Though she didn’t win, (surviving through 6 of the live television finals and finally coming a controversial 6th place) Beverley’s recognition as a superb vocalist with a warm heart set her apart, and on a new path, continuing to teach while also performing to much broader audiences. Singing and teaching for her have been irrevocably linked since the show. “I like to pull them together. Being on television and then being able to go back to that school and see the children is such a blessing to me, because to them I haven’t become unreachable, and they can say, ‘Look What Mrs. Trotman Done!’………that means a lot to me.

Beverley’s own story is a lesson in hope. Left with her grandparents as a baby, and raised alongside their ten other children, she never knew her natural mother, who died just five years later. Despite this tough beginning, Beverley dismisses suggestions that her childhood was difficult. “I knew nothing else!.” Those were the cards dealt – as far as I was concerned, that was normal life.” Brought up in a Christian household, church proved a valuable training ground for Beverley’s voice. Beverley went on to run gospel choirs in the local community and also joined the UK’s award winning ‘Kingdom Choir’. Qualifying as a teacher, Beverley also led youth singing groups and helped run school productions, and as her passion for music grew, so did her love for the children she taught. In a society of broken families and teenage violence, Beverley urged her pupils to avoid the negative aspects of youth culture highlighted in the media. “Every teacher likes to bring life experience into the classroom,” she says, “That’s what inspires children. I can say that I’ve come from a situation where I’ve had no parents, but I’ve still been able to make different, positive choices. That’s what it’s about: I want to show young people that they can make different positive choices.

A force to be reckoned with… That’s just one way of describing the powerful anointing that exudes from the Gospel Arts duo known as K & K Mime Ministry. When you combine refined God-given talent with a continuum of the freshness of God’s anointing… watch out! Run, Devil, Run. There are no limits to what the Lord will do in and through one’s life when in the center of His perfect will, K & K Mime Ministry is living proof of that.

Who would have ever thought that ministry, through this form of the arts, would be so widely accepted as a part of the Gospel industry. We are talking totally non-traditional here. And as history has shown, things that are non-traditional have mountains to climb, simply because breaking “tradition” takes people out of their comfort zones. What the ministry of K & K Mime has done is expand the horizons of the means by which we spread the Gospel. God uses what He sees fit to make His presence known in the land. An integral part of that picture is now mime. The art of mime is to the partaker of the Gospel as sign language is to the deaf. K & K Mime Ministry brings the lyrics of Gospel songs to life through creative depiction with the use of expressive choreographed movement and dramatic storylines.

Keith and Karl Edmonds began exploring the art of mime at the age of ten, as a means of church involvement. Much to their surprise, they’re artistic creativity was more than just a church activity… it was a ministry. They began to choreograph movements for various popular Gospel songs of the time, and began performing them in local churches of their hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. By the age of sixteen the twin’s ministry team had begun to receive invitations by out of state churches and schools.

The public response to their ministry varied depending on the ideology of the recipients. Many embraced their ministry as a fresh and new way of relaying the message of the good news of Jesus Christ while others have mocked their ministry due to the fact that it goes against the grain of what is known as traditional ministry. Despite opposition and rejection, Keith and Karl committed themselves to carrying out the great commission in the manner by which God has appointed them. K & K Mime has a burden to reach the people of this present generation, as well as the babes in Christ, with tangible and life applicable depictions of the Gospel. That has been the driving force that caused them to continue on even when ministry brought sacrifice. There have been times when people have even questioned whether or not mime ministry is of God. K & K believe that the Lord is also using their ministry as a means to tear down the walls of religion. The key to their ministry is true relationship with Jesus Christ. That is what they encourage through their ministry- relationship. K & K Mime Ministry is not just Christian entertainment. Their purpose is to minister under the anointing, so that people might be saved, set free, delivered, and made whole.

Does that sound familiar? That is what the Gospel does. K & K Mime simply uses their God-given talent and creativity to turn up the volume on the word of God. They deliver the message of God in a manner by which even the unchurched person can relate and understand it.

Because mime was not a common church ministry when K & K Mime first began, they had to work overtime and use wisdom as to how to properly promote this unique ministry. Using discernment, they took most platforms that were offered to them. As God would have it, every opened door was an opportunity for another opened door. Smaller events led to larger events, which increased their exposure to the masses. In 1996 they ministered, for the first time, on BET’S Bobby Jones Gospel. It has been outlets such as this that have mainstreamed K & K Mime Ministry into the Gospel industry. They began to receive offers to minister with various Gospel artists and in churches across the country. Their ministry caught on like wildfire. Before they knew it, mime groups were popping up all over the place. Even some churches that initially did not receive their ministry had mime groups. Did that mean that there were no more skeptics? Of course not. As we all know, anything worth doing is going to have some level of challenge. It is that challenge that has kept Keith and Karl ever striving for excellence. Demand for their ministry has grown so much in the past seven years that they had to develop a strategy for managing themselves commercially. The twins began a production company, The Marmont Group, through which they manage K & K Mime Ministry as well as the host of plays that they have written and produced. They have capitalized on any and all means that God has graced them with to ensure that their purpose for this season of their lives are carried out. Serving as a catalyst for K & K Mime Ministry in the Gospel industry have been sold-out obedience to God and the favor that comes as a result. The Lord has placed people in their lives that were willing to contribute to their destiny. They have participated in several Gospel music tours in this country and abroad with well-known Gospel artist, who could be considered non-traditional as well. This exposure, along with television, has caused their ministry to be experienced among the Christian community as well as by the non-believer. That has been a part of their goal from the conception of their ministry. God has allowed them to reach out to the millennial generation as well as touch the hearts and lives of the more traditional recipients of their ministry. VaShawn Mitchell:

Sometimes the most powerful art comes from the most personal challenges.

In 1996, after serving in Chicago-area churches as a Minister of Music, choir director, songwriter, and emerging force on the national Gospel music scene, VaShawn Mitchell found himself sitting alone in a jail cell.  A youthful indiscretion resulted in a sentence the court system simply would not waive, despite the support and testimony of several of the Windy City’s most influential men and women.

“A lot of times we can be on stage and appear a certain way because of a platform we have; but we haven’t taken the opportunity to work through our character issues,” VaShawn reflects.   What could have been a career-ending moment became instead the catalyst for real ministry.  “From that point on I started writing songs about life, love, encouragement and deliverance purposefully—not only to deliver myself, but also to share with the world.”

The pivotal experience served as backdrop to several of VaShawn’s most touching songs, including the contemporary Gospel hits “My Testimony,” “My Worship Is For Real” and “For My Good.”  Now, he fully demonstrates his maturity as a songwriter and worship leader on his EMI Gospel debut, simply entitled Triumphant.

True to its title, the upbeat and inspirational project was recorded live at Higher Living Christian Church (formerly New Birth South), the Atlanta-based ministry where VaShawn has been Minister of Music since 2007.  The progressive, urban styles of the southern metropolis can be felt throughout the album; however VaShawn never strays far from the sound and influences of his hometown.

VaShawn Mitchell was born and raised in Chicago, IL.  The city known as the birthplace of Gospel music quickly made its imprint on him.  When he was barely a teenager, VaShawn became the assistant music director of St. Mark Baptist Church, working closely with nationally renowned choir leader Lonnie Hunter.

“I started singing as a kid in the children’s choir and young adult choir, but I showed a gift for directing at that time,” says VaShawn.  His ability to conduct and lead singers many years his senior kept him at the forefront of music departments throughout the city.

For nearly a decade he served as Minister of Music at Bishop Larry D. Trotter’s Sweet Holy Spirit Church, setting the musical tone both within the church walls and on the ministry’s top-selling recording projects.

VaShawn, the youngest Minister of Music in that church’s history, successfully merged the contemporary themes he composed with the traditional choir vibe that marked the church’s worship services.  “At that time my style was shaped through trial and error,” VaShawn explains. “I didn’t have strong writer influences then.  I was just writing for my church choir.”

As he grew into his role at Sweet Holy Spirit, VaShawn began to be impacted by other popular choir leader-songwriters of that period, including Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr and Donald Lawrence.

It was Lawrence who became a mentor to VaShawn, urging him to become familiar with the classics of the contemporary Gospel era.  “Donald encouraged me to study songwriters from before my time.  I started purposefully going to old music stores and places like YouTube to listen to those people and to develop my songwriting,” he says.

VaShawn’s artistic vision grew, shaping him into a mature worship leader and a recognized Gospel songwriter.  His songs have been recorded by some of Gospel’s most celebrated artists, including Smokie Norful (“Just Can’t Stop”), Vanessa Bell Armstrong (“Help”), and Bishop Paul Morton (“Cry Your Last Tear”).

It is now his role as a music minister that brings him the greatest fulfillment.  “I am most passionate about my church ministry,” he shares.  “As ministers of music we birth new worshippers and new praisers on a weekly basis. A lot of that is not necessarily singing, but ministering the music that is being sung. “

His fervor for worship and praise can be felt throughout Triumphant; from the enthusiastic high praise opener and the powerful title track, to the deeply personal choir ballad “Nobody Greater” and the prophetic hymn “Be Fruitful.”  More than a collection of hits, the project stands as a fully developed theme.

“Most of the time when I record, I conceptualize the project as a total piece,” VaShawn reveals.  “With this album God gave me the concept and I started thinking about why we are triumphant people.”

Every song on the project is a reflection of that revelation, including the show-stopping, instant classic “His Blood Still Works,” which features the distinctive sound of former Witness lead vocalist Lisa Page Brooks.  “Over the last season, as people have been struggling financially, it seems we’ve been losing our faith. Our faith was misplaced in resources and not in the Source,” says VaShawn.  “I wanted to remind people that the blood never stopped working.  It enables us to live above what we see.”

With a passion for worship, the heart of an encourager and the story of an overcomer, VaShawn Mitchell is truly an artist for this age.

Forever Jones:

“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him (Psalm 127:3).”  While some may gloss over this biblical declaration, the verse defines the very core of the Jones family.  Forever JONES is a family band; a musical conundrum, rewarded with a miracle, and blessed with divine talent.

Early in their marriage, Dewitt & Kim Jones were given devastating news.   A stint with toxic shock syndrome at an early age left Kim diagnosed with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, and the young newlyweds were told they would likely never have children.  The doctor prescribed medication for Kim, but she made a decision not to take it, but rather to completely trust God with her life and for her healing.  Now after 31 years of marriage and miracle after miracle, the couple has 5 children and recently welcomed their first grandchild.

Growing up in the state of Washington, Dewitt and Kim come from very musical backgrounds and have been traveling, writing songs together and singing Gospel music in one form or another since their teens. Dewitt experienced early success as a songwriter when Ron Kenoly recorded his composition “Use Me” on the album “God Is Able.”  The song has now become a staple in many churches around the world and has been covered numerous times, most notably by the GRAMMY® Award winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

It wasn’t until Dewitt obeyed a very specific call from the Lord that there was a marked moment in the young family’s life that would notably change their path forever.  “20 years ago the Lord gave me an invitation to spend time with Him at 9 A.M. every morning,”  Those 9 A.M. family devotions and worship times have not stopped since, and continue to be the foundation and driving force behind the heart for worship and passion for the presence of God that forever JONES so fervently embody.  “All of our songs are born out of our morning family devotions,” says Dewitt.

It was through a long time relationship with their manager Jeoffrey Benward that the Jones family was introduced to GRAMMY® Award winning writer/producer Tommy Sims.  It took no time at all for Sims to take a liking to what he heard and saw and quickly signed up to produce forever Jones’ debut recording.  “In 20 years of being in professional music, I’ve never heard anything like this,” proclaims Sims, himself no stranger to the very best that the music world has to offer.  The resulting album, “Get Ready” (EMI Gospel), is a spirited and distinctive tour-de-force of pop/rock/soul Gospel that captivates listeners from beginning to end.  From the instantly memorable piano-driven pop melody of “Heaven” to the swirling throwback in-the-pocket rhythm of the title track and lush melodic song of worship “You Can Do Anything”, the songs alone are remarkable selling points from this otherwise “debut” group.

Although their roots are in the Northwest, where they still travel and minister, the Jones family now resides in Shreveport, LA where they are all actively involved in ministry at Shreveport Community Church.  “We are living a miracle,” says Kim.  “Anytime I stand on any stage with my children is an amazing moment and reminder of God’s faithfulness to me and my family.”

We started this Mime Team about 3 years ago. We consist of 5 people that love and serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We have loved how Mime can bring such creativity and life to a song. We think it really causes the viewer to experience the story of each song we dance to.

We pray that many are blesssed, encouraged, stirred up and edified in Christ as they view our dances. Our desire is for God to be lifted up and exalted in each dance.

Shekinah Glory Ministries:

PRAISE IS WHAT THEY DO.

The world-renowned Shekinah Glory Ministry is not your average choir. In fact, technically, they aren’t a choir at all. They are a dynamic retinue of psalmists, minstrels, karar [Hebrew for whirler], encouragers and banner-wavers who have become the paradigm for urban praise and worship music in this young millennium.

Over the last decade, they have taken their place alongside Fred Hammond and Israel & New Breed as the trendsetters in contemporary praise and worship music.

It all started when Apostle H. Daniel Wilson went away on a 40 day sabbatical in 1999. While in prayer, he says that God gave him the vision to launch a unique praise and worship team. The Lord told him to call it Shekinah Glory Ministry.

When Apostle Wilson returned to his Chicago-area church, Valley Kingdom Ministries International (VKMI), he preached on themes of praise and worship for an entire year.

Then he gave his minister of music, Rose Harper, the charge to pull the praise and worship team together.  After Shekinah Glory Ministry (SGM) was assembled and put in place as the official praise and worship team for VKMI, it was decided that SGM would make a live recording.

Enter Elder William Murphy III. The gifted psalmist was invited to minister at the church one time and one of the songs he sang was called “Praise is What I Do.” He had returned back to his home the next day when he received a call from the church. They wanted Elder Murphy to perform the song on their upcoming debut CD.

“It was a song birthed out of a crisis in my life,” Murphy once said. “At the time I had just written the song, I had just experienced a divorce.  I felt like a dead man walking.  I was certain that my days in ministry were over.  I knew that my ministry had just come to a screeching halt.  I felt that no one would invite me to minister and I would lose my anointing.  That’s why it’s so important to have that personal relationship with God.  I told God that there’s no way I’m walking away, because I love God too much but there’s no way I felt I could get on the microphone to sing or preach again.  So, I started investigating what else could I do.  I only had a year of college so I wasn’t ready to run a corporation, I couldn’t start a business because I didn’t have any money at the time.

I just asked the Lord, what can I do, what exactly do I do?  Then, I asked Him what exactly could I do to support my two sons?  That’s when those words were birthed out of my spirit.  Praise is what I do.  That’s the one thing I could do.  I messed up just about everything else but I could still praise you, through the good or the bad.  That song was born at the most difficult time in my life.  Often, people come up to me and tell me that this song has gotten them through some of the most difficult periods in their life, too.  And that to me was such a blessing to hear.  So, God is just so awesome and so unbelievable to take a tragedy and flip it to make the experience such a blessing to so many people.”

Prior to the live recording, Apostle Wilson had a foot washing service where he anointed SGM and washed the feet of the members in the same way that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. The double CD Praise is What I Do was reviewed in the prestigious Village Voice newspaper where the reporter wrote,  “What you hear on these two CDs is everything that transpired in the studio, without editing or overdubs.”

It was Elder Murphy’s heartfelt “Praise is What I Do” that resonated with the church community and gospel radio in a phenomenal fashion.  Since the album was released in 2000, that song remained on Top Ten radio playlists for four years.  The Praise is What I Do CD spent 67 weeks on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart where it peaked at #5 and was eventually certified gold.

By the time of their next recording, Phil Tarver had come in as the worship leader for SGM.  Their 2004 CD Shekinah Glory Ministry Live proved to be their biggest yet. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart and spent an astounding 101 weeks on the survey. That project featured Tarver’s warm baritone on the Latin-flavored “Arise/Shine” and the reverential ballad “How Deeply I Need You.” However, it was Valencia Lacy’s reading of  the dramatic ballad “Yes” that received the strongest radio airplay. It reached #21 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel songs chart but received consistent year-round airplay rotation with impact far beyond the story those numbers tell.

SGM continued to touch hearts and souls with the 2007 Jesus CD release. The title song was birthed during a Bible study by LaTosca House who finished honing the song with noted producer Daniel Weatherspoon. She also led the powerful paean that became SGM’s first #1 Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart hit. The CD rose to #5 on the Top Gospel Albums chart and spent 53 weeks on the survey.

As SGM tours the world in venues ranging from Sao Paulo Brazil’s Pacembe Soccer Stadium to New York’s Madison Square Garden, they are showing the world the majesty and beauty in simple yet authentic praise and worship. After all, Praise is What They Do.
